Overview

Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of fats found in fish oil, some plant oils, and seeds. They are different from omega-6 fatty acids.

Types of omega-3 fatty acids include alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Some are taken as supplements.

People use omega-3 fatty acids for many conditions. See specific omega-3 fatty acids for more information.

This is a general review of omega-3 fatty acids as a group. See information on specific omega-3 fatty acids, such as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), eicosatetraenoic acid, and stearidonic acid, to learn more. Also, see information on food sources of omega-3 fatty acids, such as chia, fish oil, flaxseed oil, and krill oil, to learn more. Don't confuse omega-3 fatty acids with omega-6 fatty acids. These are not the same.
